JordanaStarting in 1995, I worked both in advertising as a planner and as a dancer in retro- jazz cabaret shows. I became intrigued with combining these two experiences by using the agency format of one-on-one video interviews used to build stories for presentations. I used this formal research method to express, capture and present 'movement interviews' and edit it to contrasting music. I called five professional, sensational performers who I had worked with, compiled a short list of movements that viewers could relate to, keeping it open for improvisation and then listed some actions that stood out as symbolic of the strange time, just after 9/11, in which I was filming this piece. Playing with ideas of personality archetypes as a base, using video as a medium to play with time, I set out to question what is the beginning and what is the measurable end of a narrative. Key to this project was making the soundtrack by piecing together clips of techno music, Spanish and American pop songs, environmental sounds of spring, and vocal harmonists from the Weimar era. © 2009 Jordana Kaplow All Rights Reserved |
